Grass emphasis refers to operations that include pasture as a major part (more than 75%) of the animal's diet.
Why do goat farms say "n/a"?
Goats are browsers, not grazers, and usually must be fed large amounts of grain. Most of the goats on the farms listed here are allowed to browse and spend time on pasture (see individual web sites), but very few goat dairies use grass/legume pasture as a major source of feed. While we certainly agree that goats benefit from being on pasture, most consumers looking for pasture-based milk products are interested in the high CLA value in the milk that comes from animals eating growing pasture plants. For more information, visit the Eatwild web site.
Simply allowing animals of any kind to roam around on pasture is not enough for a "yes" on grass emphasis. The farm must have a grazing management plan that provides for pasture rest periods and erosion prevention.
